Who likes riddles?

We learnt this in a class today and had fun guessing. When we finally figured it out, it was so funny and everything made sense. Besides trying to figure out the riddle, try to pick out a stylistic feature of the poem.

I’m a riddle in nine syllables,
An elephant, a ponderous house,
A melon strolling on two tendrils.
O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers!
This loaf’s big with its yeasty rising.
Money’s new-minted in this fat purse.
I’m a means, a stage, a cow in calf.
I’ve eaten a bag of green apples,
Boarded the train there’s no getting off.

Sylvia Plath

What’s the answer, you say?

The poet had written this when she was pregnant. (Haha, don’t slap your palm on your head.) If you notice, those random phrases like elephant and melon all connote size. And that’s how one would feel if she’s preggers, wouldn’t one?

And the stylistic feature Plath cleverly infuses in her poem is the nine 9-syllables lines. Every line has nine syllables, which goes on for nine lines. Because pregnancy lasts for nine months

Isn’t this poem wonderful?

I haven’t a clue and the suspense is killing me. Are you setting a time limit before announcing the answer? Because it’t not likely I’m going to make it through the next couple of days without surfing the net determined to find the answer. 😀

sulz: hey! cannot cheat! will reveal the answer monday morn before leave for school. the trick is to examine each line on its own and find the similarity. then find the common theme with other lines.
